Awarded with a Michelin star for 15 consecutive years, Henrique Leis restaurant is a must for anyone visiting the South of Portugal.
This year part of the family joined Ben's dad on his annual trip to Portugal to celebrate his birthday. First stop? Henrique Leis restaurant of course!
The restaurant delivers out of this world dishes at an incredibly reasonable price, making it Portugal's best kept secret.
Brazilian chef Henrique Leis began his culinary journey in 1982 at 'Bem Feito' in Rio but it was in Portugal, in the Algarve that he realised his great dream of opening his own restaurant in 1993.
We opted for the evening tasting menu, paired with various wines for just €58 per person.
The evening tasting menu contained an incredible 9 courses. We began with pâté and fresh bread which isn't mentioned on the menu and the desserts totalled 3 courses alone!
Every course was delicately prepared, the flavours always interesting and unique. The tuna carpaccio had ever so slightly different flavours on each corner which was surprising and fun. One of our favourite dishes was the vegetable veloute. It looks more like a shot than food, but the hot cauliflower soup makes my brain confused and happy at the same time!
The dou of frois gras was a huge talking point as the it contained two types of frois gras, one of which was rolled in white chocolate!
We've previously visited Henrique Leis in the summer and as the restaurant is nestled in the hills of Almancil, the view of the sea from the balcony is breathtaking. So visiting in winter was a different experience altogether. (We actually visited on the last day of the season).
The downstairs restaurant interior felt quite grotto like with exposed brick walls and art painted by the chef Henrique Leis himself. The wait staff were also incredibly attentive and polite and really made us feel welcome.
My only suggestion would be a little background music as not only do I believe it essential to create a relaxing ambiance, it would have made our birthday celebrations seem a little less loud!
Highly recommend, affordable fine dining, a truly memorable experience
The taster menu either at lunch or dinner. If you can go in summer for the views too!
